The Elf That Flew
A magical tale about Greenleaf the Elf who lives happily in the rainforest of Katandra Reserve surrounded by his many tree friends. A chance encounter with five fabulous flying flower fairies propels Greenleaf on an unlikely quest to fly like the fairies. Told with humour and warmth this tale celebrates the importance of being yourself while promoting love for our natural environment.
This delightful book is ideal for children aged 5 to 11 to read on their own, however it is author Lindy’s hope, that parents will embrace the book as a family activity. Set in Katandra Reserve, Holgate, Lindy’s aim is to encourage children and their families to explore the beautiful rainforest which lies at the heart of the Central Coast, NSW.
In The Elf that Flew there are specific locations mentioned, such as the grizzly Goblins’ giant Strangler Fig and Greenleaf’ Turpentine home. The book’s glossary also contains links to Katandra’s bushwalks as well as information about the local flora, fauna and of course fairies. Families can read the book then exercise their bodies as well as their imaginations by exploring where story takes place.
If you can't visit the Central Coast the book is still a great read for children of all ages. Use the story as inspiration for discovering your own local park or forest. As Lindy explains in the Glossary: All forests have elves....so go and discover your own local fairy folk. (Also see the Children and Nature Website for more ideas on encouraging children back to nature.)
The book also contains a meditation which connects children with the love of nature and fosters a sense of stewardship for our natural environment. It is a lovely introduction to the life affirming practice of meditation for children and their parents. Other activities for children in the book are a Criss-Cross Puzzle and tips on how to be a Forest Friend and help our environment.
